The John Wood Community College District is one of 39 community college districts in Illinois. The second-youngest community college in the state, John Wood was founded in 1974 in order to provide residents with high-quality, affordable programs in higher education. It admitted its first students (668 of them) in fall 1975.
A largely rural area about 2,300 square miles in size, the JWCC District has a population of approximately 97,000 persons. The District includes all of Adams, Pike, and Brown counties and portions of six other counties in western Illinois and it encompasses 13 public school districts. In addition, the College serves residents of Northeast Missouri, just across the Mississippi River.
