Basic Guide for Cover Letters (accompanies your resume)

The date

Your address: 2-3 lines

Person or department to whom you are writing
The company's address: 2-4 lines

 

Dear __________:         or Attn: Human Resources (or use the appropriate person's name)
(try not to use "Dear Sir or Madam" or "To Whom it May Concern")

1st paragraph - Why are you writing?
Example opening sentence: I am responding to the ad for the _____________ position as advertised in the Quincy Herald Whig on January 15, 2003. I am confident that I have the skills and qualifications you are seeking for this position. or With over 10 years of progressive responsibility in the customer service field, I am confident that I have the skills necessary to do this job well.

2nd Paragraph - Why should you be considered for the job?
Example: In my current job, I am responsible for...
Example: Being able to present information to customers is a skill...
Example: I pride myself on my ability to...
Vary the sentence structure - not all sentences should begin with "I"
This paragraph should include strong sentences explaining your job-related and "soft" skills - such as your ability to communicate, meet deadlines, work well with others, and solve problems.

3rd Paragraph - What actions should be taken?
Example: I have enclosed a copy of my resume for your review. I look forward to meeting with you in person to further discuss my qualifications and how they can meet your company's needs.
Example: I will contact you at the end of this week.
Example: Please contact me if you have any questions.
Include your contact information, generally your phone number(s).

End with a "thank you" or similar statement.

Closing - "Sincerely" always works,
