Philosophy and Mission of John Wood Community College

Mission

John Wood Community College will provide the highest quality educational opportunities and services fully accessible at affordable levels in an attractive, caring, and safe environment to meet the needs of a diverse community.

Philosophy

John Wood Community College is an open-admission, comprehensive, public community college that seeks to enhance the lives of those it serves by striving for academic excellence, integrity, accountability, and flexibility. Recognizing and respecting the uniqueness, potential, and value of each person, the College offers a variety of programs, curricula, and educational delivery systems and schedules to accommodate students’ individual requirements and different rates of learning. Further, the College seeks to stimulate the intellectual, academic, personal, and social development of students as productive, engaged and responsible citizens in support of the community.

Goals

To fulfill its mission, John Wood Community College is guided by the following goals:

  • Provide educational opportunities for individuals to continue their education, enter the workforce, or update skills.
  • Improve community life by offering programs and activities for personal and professional development.
  • Maximize the potential for student success by providing academic, financial, and other support services.
  • Assure accessibility through limiting physical, financial, and social barriers.
  • Provide experiences that develop general education competencies and awareness of community and global issues.
  • Promote access to educational opportunities by enhancing instructional availability using traditional and alternative delivery systems.
  • Encourage excellence in teaching and learning by supporting professional development, innovation, creativity, and the use of technology.
  • Remain responsive to individual and community educational needs.
  • Demonstrate accountability and continuous improvement through college-wide assessment.
  • Maintain open and regular communication, dialogue and interaction with the community.
