As a publicly supported institution, why does John Wood need to fundraise?

John Wood is tax-assisted, not tax-supported initially, Illinois community college funding was designed based on one-third each from state appropriations, local property taxes, and student tuition. For FY 2012 55.8 percent is budgeted to come from student tuition, 24.5 percent from local taxes, and 13.9 percent from state appropriations, and 5.8 percent from other services.

Can I designate where I want my gift to go?

You choose the area where you would like to support. The JWCC Foundation administers a variety of funds. You can decide to support a specific scholarship or program, or  the College's area of greatest need.

Can I make a memorial gift in honor of someone?

Your gift may be made in tribute to or in memory of a special person. For more information, see Giving Opportunities.

Is my gift tax-deductible?

All gifts made to the JWCC Foundation are tax deductible as prescribed by the law.

How can I include JWCC in my will?

There are various bequest options available to you. While you are not required to do so, we recommend that you notify the College if you include JWCC in your will, so we can make certain your intentions will be carried out. Below is sample bequest language for you to view.

Language for Bequests

I.          Unrestricted – Fixed Cash Amount
 
I leave                     dollars ($         .    ) to John Wood Community College Foundation, an Illinois nonprofit corporation in Quincy, Illinois.  The Foundation may use this money for any educational or charitable purpose that the Board of Directors of the Foundation considers appropriate.

II.       Unrestricted – Share of Residue of Donor’s Estate
I leave                     percent (          %) of the residue of my estate to John Wood Community College Foundation, an Illinois nonprofit corporation in Quincy, Illinois.   The Foundation may use this money for any educational or charitable purpose that the Board of Directors of the Foundation considers appropriate.

III.      Restricted to a Particular Community – Fixed Cash Amount
I leave                     dollars ($         .    ) to John Wood Community College Foundation, an Illinois nonprofit corporation in Quincy, Illinois. It is my intent that the Foundation use this money for any educational or charitable purpose that benefits the programs of John Wood Community College Foundation at                               , Illinois.

IV.     Restricted to a Particular Program – Fixed Cash Amount
I leave                     dollars ($         .    ) to John Wood Community College Foundation, an Illinois nonprofit corporation in Quincy, Illinois. It is my intent that the Foundation use this money for any educational or charitable purpose that benefits the                                   programs of John Wood Community College Foundation.

 V.     Language to Designate Income in Respect of a Decedent for Charitable Gifts
Use language such as “I instruct that all charitable gifts, bequests & devises should be made, to the extent possible, from assets that constitute ‘income in respect of a decedent’ as that term is defined in The Internal Revenue Code.”

Absent this language, gifts will be deemed to be from principal rather than income, and no income tax deduction will be available to the decedent.
