Soft-Skills Training
John Wood Community College is offering a ten-week noncredit course, “The Secrets to Succeeding in the Workplace (They’re Not Really Secrets)” to address the growing need for soft-skills training. The course will be held on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 to 9:00 PM, beginning August 20 and ending October 22. The cost is $105 per person. Students should register a minimum of two business days prior to the seminar.
The purpose of this course is to help students identify and develop the necessary skills required for a successful job search, interview, hiring, and retention process. Students will learn how to identify job opportunities, develop a job-specific resume, develop concise interviewing skills, negotiate a job offer, and develop necessary human relations skills required to keep a job.
Self-esteem, developing positive attitudes, communication, self-motivation and self-management, critical thinking, and standards of conduct are just a few of the topics to be covered in this class.

Paraprofessional Testing
The State Board of Education has endorsed four assessment options for establishing a candidate’s qualifications as a paraprofessional educator under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB). One of the options includes the ACT WorkKeys test of Applied Mathematics, Reading for Information and Writing, and the ACT Instructional Support Inventory with minimum scores as follows:
Applied Mathematics - 4; Reading for Information - 4; Writing - 3 (proctored by JWCC); Instructional Support Inventory - 150 (completed by a supervisor or member of personnel)
In order to assist you in filling these requirements, JWCC—being an ACT Certified Center—is offering the following ACT WorkKeys testing dates:
Monday, September 22, 2008 (4 - 7 pm; registrations and payments due August 29)
Tuesday, November 18, 2008 (4 - 7 pm; registrations and payments due October 24)
Requirements to hold test: minimum of 10 and a maximum of 30 registrants!
Cost for entire exam is $75.00.
Drop/Cancellation Policy
Due to an increase in the
number of last minute cancellations and registered participants failing to show
up for the exam, the following drop/cancellation policy will be enforced.
Participants must register and pay for the WorkKeys exam by the
registration deadline date. No refunds will be issued for any reason after
the deadline date.
All tests will be held at the Quincy campus, 48th and Harrison.
