Welcome to John Wood Open Learning! Since 1976,
thousands of area residents have successfully completed coursework via Open Learning. John Wood Community College was a pioneer in this innovative system
of learning. Open Learning offers a learning environment in which
transfer-level, developmental and career/technical courses may be taken.
A few keywords describe Open Learning. One key word is FLEXIBILITY. You may find that taking all of your
coursework in Open Learning works for you. Others find that a combination of Open Learning
courses and traditional classes best meet their needs.
Another key word is MASTERY.
We will ask you to understand and master a unit of study before you move
on. Learners show this mastery by achieving a mastery grade on unit tests.
Each academic department sets a mastery level, so be sure to work with
your instructor to take full advantage of this opportunity.
TIME is also a key word in
Open Learning. Credit courses are designed to satisfy the learning goals equal
to 16 weeks of college instruction. These are met with one hour of
instruction per week per credit. Mastering the learning goals of a course
will probably require an additional two to three hours of study and
learning per credit hour. You are free to set your pace in Open Learning to
finish sooner than 16-weeks.
