What Makes a Portfolio?
  • 1. Entry (class assignment)  for each
of the eight General Education Goals
  • 2. Reflection Statement for each of the eight
    entries
  • NOTE:  You must have a separate, unique entry and reflection statement for each of the eight General Education goals. You cannot use an assignment more than once.

What Makes a Portfolio?
  • 1. Entry (class assignment)
  • An entry could be a term paper, a class assignment, a video or audio tape of a speech or music performance, a photo of an original painting or sculpture, etc.
  • 2. Reflection Statement
  • A reflection statement is a short paragraph in which the student explains how the entry meets the general education goal through the student’s learning experiences.

7
What Kind of Assignment
Should NOT be used?
  • Do Not Use:
  • Objective style classroom tests (such as multiple choice/true false tests)
  • Feedback form for a speech which you received from your instructor
8
How do I complete
a Portfolio Entry?
  • Choose one assignment (clean and ungraded) from a course you took at JWCC.
  • List the title and course number of the course the assignment was completed  in (e.g. CMN 101).
  • Explain what the assignment required you to do.
  • Read the eight General Education Goals.
  • Choose the General Education Goal that is relevant to the assignment and identify it in the reflection statement.
  • Write your reflection statement which is a short paragraph in which you explain how the entry meets the General Education Goal.
  • Place this completed reflection statement with the assignment in your portfolio. This completes one entry.

Example:  General Education
Goal 1
  • Describe the assignment:

  • In PHL 121-Introduction to Ethics our assignment was to read the story “Custom is King” by the ancient Greek historian Herodotus (485-430BCE).
  • Our instructions were to comment on how the funeral custom and the philosophy towards death of the two societies in the story were similar and different than our American practice and attitude towards the subject of death.
14
Example:  Reflection Statement for General Education Goal 1
  • Demonstrate an awareness of human
  • values and diverse cultures.

  • In the story, both the Greeks and Calatians desired to honor their dead by their respective funeral practices. The Greeks practiced cremation to release the souls of their dead and the Calatians practiced cannibalism in order to gain their ancestors spirit and wisdom.  Neither custom is prevalent in America.  Although cremation has been gaining more acceptance in this country, most Americans are from the Judeo-Christian tradition in which burial is the preferred practice. Through this assignment, I was able to compare the values and beliefs of different cultures, and I acquired an understanding of how and why their values differ from my own.
15

Goal 5
  • Describe the assignment.

  • In ENG 101, I wrote a Comparison and Contrast Essay. My essay entitled “Music and Maestros” compares two very different music teachers I have had over the years. I needed to communicate clearly my purpose and thesis in the first paragraph by telling my readers that while both teachers were excellent and taught me much about music, their styles were very different. A point-by-point comparison, fleshing out my assertions with explanations and examples was  required. In my conclusion, I needed to emphasize the strengths of both styles and prove that both teachers accomplished their goal of improving the performance of their students.

  • Describe the assignment (Learning Outcome 6.2):
  • In ENG 102 I was assigned a research paper which required me to use skills that I learned in the course. The assignment required me to open with a one or two paragraph descriptive narrative that illuminated the issue that I chose for my argument essay. The remainder of the essay required me to write an argumentative essay using ten quality sources. I was required to use at least two books, two journals, and an interview. I also had to use quotation, paraphrase, and summary and document my sources correctly using MLA format.
40
Example:  Reflection Statement for General Education Goal 6
  • Demonstrate the ability to evaluate and apply information technology
  • Learning Outcome 6.2:
  • This essay demonstrates my ability to access quality sources and use them responsibly in my essay. I did enough reading to understand my topic and structure the essay based on my ideas. I then accessed reliable sources to back up my main points. I integrated my sources smoothly into my own prose, and documented my sources using MLA format. My Works Cited page demonstrates my knowledge of MLA format and gives the proper information for others to be able to access my sources.
