- Describe the assignment:
- In PHL 121-Introduction to Ethics our assignment was to read the story
“Custom is King” by the ancient Greek historian Herodotus (485-430BCE).
- Our instructions were to comment on how the funeral custom and the
philosophy towards death of the two societies in the story were similar
and different than our American practice and attitude towards the
subject of death.
|
|
14
|
- Demonstrate an awareness of human
- values and diverse cultures.
In the story, both the Greeks and Calatians desired to honor
their dead by their respective funeral practices. The Greeks practiced
cremation to release the souls of their dead and the Calatians practiced
cannibalism in order to gain their ancestors spirit and wisdom. Neither custom is prevalent in
America. Although cremation has
been gaining more acceptance in this country, most Americans are from
the Judeo-Christian tradition in which burial is the preferred practice.
Through this assignment, I was able to compare the values and beliefs of
different cultures, and I acquired an understanding of how and why their
values differ from my own.

- Describe the assignment.
- In ENG 101, I wrote a Comparison and Contrast Essay. My essay entitled
“Music and Maestros” compares two very different music teachers I have
had over the years. I needed to communicate clearly my purpose and
thesis in the first paragraph by telling my readers that while both
teachers were excellent and taught me much about music, their styles
were very different. A point-by-point comparison, fleshing out my
assertions with explanations and examples was required. In my conclusion, I needed
to emphasize the strengths of both styles and prove that both teachers
accomplished their goal of improving the performance of their students.
