Surgical Technology
Certificate

40 Semester Hours

The intent of this program is to prepare students for the role of surgical technologist. Surgical technologists are allied health professionals who function as an integral part of the surgical team. They possess expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique.

Surgical technologists who work as a member of the surgical team are responsible for preparing the sterile set-up for the appropriate surgical procedure, passing instruments, anticipating the needs of the surgeon during surgery and cleaning and preparing the operating room for the next patient.

Surgical technologists are employed in hospital operating rooms, delivery rooms, cast rooms, emergency departments, ambulatory care centers and central supply departments. A number of surgical technologists are employed as instructors and directors of surgical technology programs.

This surgical technology program is three semesters in length. Clinical experience is obtained at several area hospitals and surgical clinics. All courses for the surgical technology program must be completed with a grade of “C” or higher to successfully complete the program.

The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs (CAAHP). Students completing the curriculum are eligible to take the national certification examination.

NOTE: Only students who do not need additional coursework and who take the number of credits or courses as listed each semester can complete the program in the time given. Others will take longer to complete.
