Thomas Klincar Named Next President of JWCC

Thomas D. Klincar, D.A.Dr. Thomas D. Klincar has been selected as the next president of John Wood Community College. The Board of Trustees, following a unanimous vote, made the announcement during its regular meeting at the campus Wednesday evening, May 21, 2008.

Dr. Klincar will assume his new post August 1. He succeeds Dr. William Simpson, who is retiring after almost 11-1/2 years as the college’s president.

Dr. Klincar, a colonel in the U.S. Air Force, is currently serving as commander (chancellor) of the College for Enlisted Professional Military Education at Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base in Alabama. He assumed that post in July 2007, having previously served for two years as commandant (president) of the Community College of the Air Force at Maxwell Air Force Base.

Dr. Klincar is expected to visit the campus again in early June.

“We are very pleased that Dr. Klincar has accepted our offer for JWCC President,” said Jerry Hagmeier, chair of the JWCC Board of Trustees. “Dr. Klincar has big shoes to fill and we anticipate continued growth and expansion in the future. We look forward to continued support from the JWCC community. We anticipate the same good relationship with Dr. Klincar that we have enjoyed with Dr. Simpson the last eleven and a half years. We eagerly look forward to Dr. Klincar taking us into the next phase of our growth.”

Dr. Klincar, a native of Belleville (Ill.), joined the Air Force immediately following graduation from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, where he received a bachelor of science in journalism. While in the Air Force, he earned a master of science in systems management from University of Southern California-Los Angeles and a doctor of arts from de LaSalle University in Manila, Philippines.

As commander of the Community College of the Air Force, Dr. Klincar oversaw 102 campuses; 330,000 students; and 6,500 faculty members. Other recent experience includes serving for two years as dean of academics at North Atlantic Treaty Organization School in Germany and for three years as chief of the doctrine and policy division at Headquarters Air Mobility Command, Scott Air Force Base, Ill. During his 28 years in the Air Force, he also served as a staff officer for various headquarters, an air crew member on the E-3 AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) during the Balkan campaigns, a technical training instructor, an English teacher, a speech writer for generals, and a consultant.

The Board of Trustees, working with consultant Larry Ebbers of Iowa State University, began its search for a new president in February. Twenty-five completed application packets were received, and four finalists visited the college and community for interviews over the past three weeks. Dr. Klincar and his wife, Debbie, were here April 28 and 29.

The Klincars have three adult children and two grandchildren. Mrs. Klincar is a native of Okawville (Ill.).
