2010 - 2011 Season

Norman Rodriguez, Head Basketball Coach Norman Rodriguez, Head Basketball Coach
A veteran of 15 years in the college ranks as an assistant coach and head coach, Norman Rodriguez finished his eleventh season at the helm of the John Wood Community College women's basketball program.

In 2005-2006, Rodriguez guided the Lady Blazers to their first sole Conference Championship Title (13-1) in the Mid-West Athletic Conference.  Rodriguez has compiled a 210-110 slate in seven seasons and is the winningest coach in school history.

"John Wood has plenty of positives.  The educational reputation of the college, the City of Quincy, and a beautiful, growing campus are all drawing cards," Rodriguez said.  "The excitement and support for the athletic programs that's been generated is another positive."

In his first season at the helm of the Lady Blazers, Rodriguez directed the Lady Blazers to a 25-7 record and a CCCI championship (now named MWAC), marking the first conference title for any program at that time.  That year also saw the Lady Blazers make it to the championship game of the Region 24 tournament, marking the first time that the Lady Blazers had won a post season game.  Since then, the Lady Blazers, under the guidance of Rodriguez, have made post season appearances and wins a yearly occurance.

In addition to on-court excellence, Rodriguez has stressed academic achievement for the women's basketball program.  Since becoming head coach, Rodriguez has had thirteen academic All-Americans.  Since the 2000-2001 season, the Lady Trail Blazers have been regulars in the WBCA Top 25 for academic excellence placing 2nd in the nation in 2000-2001, 13th in 2001-2002, 8th in 2002-2003, 10th in 2004-2005, and 4th in 2005-2006, 10th in 2006-2007, and 11th in 2008-2009.

In addition to his coaching duties, Rodriguez is a full-time professor of history and political science at John Wood Community College.  He also serves as the Region 4 liason for the Women's Basketball Coaches Associate JC/CC Board of Directors Representatives.

Rodriguez received his Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 1977 at Quincy (College) University, and earned a juris doctorate in 1980 at Washburn University.  He has done extended work at Western Illinois University and the University of Illinois at Springfield.  Rodriguez lives in Quincy with his wife Anita, and are the proud paretns of four children, Shane, Sabrina, Kiira, Kayley, and a granddaughter Staci.



Mike Fray, Assistant Basketball Coach Mike Fray, Assistant Basketball Coach
Coach Mike Fray finishes sixth season at John Wood Community College as an assistant coach for women's basketball.  He is a graduate of Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman State University, Kirksville, MO) with a Bachelors degree in Physical Education, and a Masters degree in School Administration.  Coach Fray's duties include development of post players, working with zone offenses, and off-campus recruiting

Coach Fray has coached sports at the high school level for 33 years, including boys' and girls' basketball, baseball, softball, and volleyball.  His 1981 volleyball team at Southeastern High School (Augusta, IL), finished third in the Illinois Class A State Volleyball Tournament.  His 1992 boys' basketball team at Southeastern was a fourth place finisher in the Illinois Class A State Basketball Tournament, and in 2002 his girls' basketball team at Southeastern was the runner-up in the Illinois Class A State Basketball Tournament.

Presently, Coach Fray is retired from education.  He and his wife, Joy, live east of Quincy.  They have two sons, Donnie and Mark, and a daughter, Michaela.



 Kelly Quigle, Assistant Basketball Coach Kelly Quigle, Assistant Basketball Coach

Coach Kelly Quigle is in her fourth year with the Lady Blazer coaching staff.  Coach Quigle's duties include overseeing the development of backcourt players, primarily with the point guards, opponent scouting and film work, and off-campus recruiting.

Coach Quigle, a native of Industry, Illinois, graduated from Industry High School in 2000 where she played high school basketball under Coach Mike Fray.  After graduating, Kelly continued her basketball career at John Wood Community College.  While at John Wood, Kelly helped the team to two 20-win seasons and to an appearance in the semi-finals and in the finals of the Region 24 tournament.

In 2002, Kelly graduated from John Wood Community College with an Associate of Arts degree, and was named an Academic All-American by the NJCAA.  She finished her career at Judson College (Elgin, IL) and completed her masters degree in December 2006 in sports management from Western Illinois University (Macomb, IL).

In addition to her basketball coaching duties at John Wood, Coach Quigle also serves as John Wood's Head Softball Coach.



Pat Rafferty, Assistant Basketball Coach

Coach Pat Rafferty enters his first season at John Wood Community College as an assistant coach for women's basketball.  He graduated from Eastern Illinois University (Charleston, IL) with a bachelor's degree in physical education.

Coach Rafferty has coached sports at the high school level for 36 years, including boys and girls basketball, football, baseball, softball, and track.  He was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coach's Hall of Fame in 2001.

Rafferty lives in Camp Point.  He has two sons, Matt and Nate, a daughter Amanda, and a grandson, Christian.
