Griggsville-Perry students meet every Monday from 3:15 - 5:15 in Room 1.

Weekly Meetings:
During many weekly meetings, students design and complete service-learning projects that address issues facing their community. Service-learning—the combination of meaningful community service, formal instruction, and reflection—is a proven method of building personal and social responsibility. By undertaking these interdisciplinary projects in their school districts, Upward Bound students equip themselves to become more successful students and citizens. This semester, student projects focus on public gardens, reading and creative writing, and nutrition. At other meetings, students participate in workshops and activities to expand their exposure to the arts and technology.

And, throughout the semester, students perform activities designed to increase their knowledge of and preparedness for the college application and admissions process. Students study different institutions’ admissions requirements, practice writing application essays and personal statements, familiarize themselves with financial aid and application deadlines, and prepare for the ACT. In addition, Upward Bound goes on college visits and cultural trips to help develop students’ social skills as they prepare to move from their childhood homes to various college towns and cities.

Weekly meetings may begin with one hour of tutoring. All students are required to receive tutoring one hour a week if they are not maintaining at least a ‘C’ in every course. If a student is receiving grades higher than a ‘C’ in all courses, they will work on strengthening their academic skills through a variety of tools. In addition to academics, students focus on writing projects, book club discussions, and college prep work.

College prep work includes filling out college applications, campus visits, applying for scholarships, ACT practice, and cultural field trips.

Community Projects:
Upward Bound believes that we need to provide the students with not only educational information and assistance, but also provide them with opportunities to get out into the community and explore new areas of interest.
