Information
Target School Advocacy
The program staff will intervene with target school officials on behalf
of the participants during individual meetings, academic advising, and
parent-teacher conferences on a quarterly basis in order to assist students in
their academic efforts. We must work with the schools in order to
successfully help the UB participants.
Saturday Seminars
In addition, participants of the Upward Bound Program will be required
to attend Saturday Seminars. These seminars provide students with a chance
to learn valuable information and foster a sense of community among UB students.
The seminars are held periodically throughout the year and attendance is
mandatory. They will be held at the JWCC campus in Quincy, unless
otherwise noted. During this time, students will participate in a variety
of activities. There will always be an academic, learning session.
Learning
sessions include such things as personal growth, academic enrichment, career awareness,
financial aid, college planning, and ACT PREP. The Saturday Seminars will
also include a fun activity for the students. These activities might be a
musical, out of town trip, athletic event, or a variety of other cultural
experience. If students cannot attend a Saturday
Seminar, they will need to submit an "Absence Request" form to the UB office
before the seminar date. Forms must be signed by a parent or school sponsor. Transportation to the Saturday Seminar will be provided by the UB staff for all
out of town students.
Financial Aid and Scholarship Application
Assistance
The UB staff conducts seminars and works extensively with each senior
participant and their parents to help them prepare financial aid, scholarship
and college admission applications. Timelines, post-secondary planning
worksheets and senior checklists are utilized to help seniors meet deadlines and
submit competitive, high quality applications.
ACT PREP
ACT test scores are
a big factor in what college or universities will accept you as well as how many
scholarships you can apply for. College is expensive and earning
scholarships is a great way to get those costs down. We use various tools
to provide effective ACT PREP to our students. This includes practice
tests, testing strategies to increase scores, and ACT Prep books.
