 Course Description: In this course, students will continue to learn about:

  • Self-advocacy

  • Self-determination

  • Disability rights

  • How to take charge of our own futures  

    Students will also work on skills needed for success at JWCC.

     Course Description: So you want to work… How do you decide what job you want? How do you find the right job? What happens to your disability benefits when you get paid to work? How do you keep a job?  There are so many questions about working! In this course, students will explore answers to these questions and get ready to work!

  • Learn about Germany and German culture

  • Explore topics and events on a local, state, and national level

  • Practice critical thinking

  • Compare and contrast

  • Summarize

  • Sort fact from opinion

Students should:

  • Take part in class discussions

  • Suggest topics of interest

  • Discuss topics with family and friends outside of class

  • Check current events outside of class

     *Note:  Minimal 3rd grade reading and writing will be helpful for this class.

 

Course:   Healthy Relationships

 Course Description: We all need other people.  We need our families.  We need friends. Most good things in life happen when we are connected with other people. But getting along with other people can be hard! In this course, we will talk about communicating and getting along with friends, co-workers, family... everyone!

 

Course:  Person Centered Planning

 Course Description:  Students will:

  • Identify their personal network

  • Seek input and support from their personal network

  • Create an action plan for life after graduation.

 Course Description: Students will:

  • Use improv to work together in a group

  • Use improv to exercise creativity

  • Present improvised scenes using skills learned in class.

 

Course:  Dance

 Course Description: Students will:

  • Explore dance steps for 3-4 dance genres

  • Learn a choreographed routine for each

  • Learn how to count music and keep tempo to different dance styles

Students will need appropriate clothing and jazz and tap shoes.

 

Course:  First Aid and Emergencies

Course Description: Students will learn about:

  • CPR

  • First aid

  • 911

  • How to respond in emergencies.

 

Course:  Intellectual/Developmental Disability in Film

Instructors:   Izak Loftus

Tuesdays and Thursdays  2:00pm - 2:50pm

Elective:  Open to all students

Tuition:  $250

Course Description: 

Students will:

  • Watch films about young adults with I/DD

  • Compare movie situations and characters to real life

  • Discuss how the movies relate to disability rights and inclusion

     Topics include dating, sports, careers, family roles, and gaining independence. 

Students must:

  • Take part in group discussions

  • Show critical thinking skills

  • Give a final presentation

     Note: This is an elective, non-credit community education course open to the entire student body. Though priority will be given to students with IDD, all JWCC students and community members are strongly encouraged to enroll; an integrated class would be ideal.
