JWCC Spring Concert Set for April 24

The John Wood Community College Concert Choir, Vocal Show Ensemble and Jazz Band will present a spring concert Tuesday, April 24 at 7 p.m. in Mary Ellen Orr Auditorium in the Paul Heath Community Education and Fine Arts Center on the campus at 48th and Harrison, Quincy. Admission is $3.00, payable at the door.  All students are admitted free of charge to the Spring Concert, but donations will also be accepted in order to support the program’s Spring Tour.

The Concert Choir will perform such pieces as “Summertime” by George Gershwin, “Sing Unto God” by Handel, “Amanti Costanti” from The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart, “Artza Alinu,” an Israeli dance song, “Jonah” by Rollo Dilworth, and a novelty arrangement of Mozart’s “Turkish March.”

The 10-member Vocal Show Ensemble showcases pop, rhythm and blues and soul numbers, including contemporary as well as standard pieces. This year’s program will include “Firework” by Katy Perry, “Fallin’ for You” by Colbie Caillat, “Need You Now,” as recorded by Lady Antebellum, “Mean” by Taylor Swift, “One Sweet Day,” as recorded by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men, a medley of Temptations hits, and “Rhythm is Gonna Get You” and “Conga,” recorded by Gloria Estefan & The Miami Sound Machine.

The Jazz Band will be featured on charts ranging from cool and mellow to swing and funk.   Numbers include “Birdland” by Joe Zawinul, “Brass Machine” by Mark Taylor, “You Know What” by Doug Beach, and “Pick Up the Pieces,” arranged by Victor Lopez.

The groups are under the direction of Professor of Music and Chairman of the Division of Fine Arts Gary DeClue.  Rhonda Basinger, associate professor of music, is associate director.
