JWCC to Host Organ/Tissue Donor Drive as Part of Community College Month

Tue. 3rd of Apr. 2012 at 12:00 am

John Wood Community College will host an Organ/Tissue Donor Drive Tuesday, April 10 in honor of National Donate Life and Community College Month.  The drive will take place from 10:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the bookstore lounge in the lower level of the Student/Administrative Center on the Quincy campus at 48th and Harrison.

JWCC students, faculty, staff, retirees, alumni, and members of the public are encouraged to attend the event to sign up as organ and tissue donors.

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White will visit JWCC’s campus for a press conference at 2 p.m. to present a Certificate of Appreciation Plaque and Illinois Blue Book to JWCC President Dr. John Letts for the College’s participation in the newly implemented Community College Campaign.  White will also address students and staff about the importance of organ/tissue donation.

Laura Cain, JWCC student and a member of a donor family will speak about her personal story with organ donation.  Laura’s sister, Leslie Manley, passed away last June while pursuing a nursing degree at JWCC.  Vikki Tulcus will also speak on behalf of those waiting on the transplant list.

Donate Life Illinois has teamed up with Workplace Partners and Community Colleges Campaign in an effort to register organ and tissue donors in the workplace.  Registered organ and tissue donors have increased to 6 million people since 2006.  Last year, 300 Illinois residents died while waiting for a transplant.  Donate Life has identified the need for more donors and began Virtual Donor Drives in an attempt to keep the number of deaths low.
