This is a temporary summer position for the Upward Bound Summer Program. Instructors teach classes for 4 weeks from June 8 to July 2, 2020. Instructors will be required to attend an orientation on Thursday, May 28, 2020 in late afternoon/evening, and possibly a Friday session at the end of summer program for student presentations/group discussions to tie the theme together at the end. This position may fulfill paid internship requirements. Please refer this position to your university’s internship coordinator.
This position is responsible for teaching high school students in the Upward Bound Summer Program. Instructors will have the opportunity to teach courses in a non-traditional way by doing hands-on activities, utilizing innovative and creative teaching techniques. Instructors are strongly encouraged to provide instruction that connects with the world outside of school. All Math, Science and English classes are tied to a yearly theme and instructors will be using a pre-built curriculum, developed by local high teachers, specifically for our program. Instructors will also evaluate the students’ progress. All materials required for instruction are provided by Upward Bound. Most classes are held on Tuesdays & Thursdays or Mondays & Wednesdays. Classes are scheduled from 1 hour to 1.5 hours per day.
Seeking instructors for the following classes:
Applicants will be considered if they are within 12 months of completing secondary education certification. Prefer applicants who have completed at least a bachelor’s degree in education or the subject field with IL, MO or IA state teaching certification OR teach college level courses in the related field. Prefer experience working with disadvantaged youth or high school students. Must have commitment to the Upward Bound Program.
Salary range is $400 per class, with an additional stipend per class for science courses or courses requiring you to develop your own curriculum. Instructors may be able to teach up to 2 courses that are usually scheduled consecutively on the same days.
