The head mechanic is responsible for maintaining the district fleet keeping all vehicles up to safety standards of the Illinois Department of Transportation and serving as a substitute bus driver.

1. Basic computer knowledge and skills. 2. Ability to plan, prioritize and efficiently use work time. 3. Maintain the requirements of the State of Illinois school bus permit. 4. Attend appropriate training programs and workshops to ensure up to date education of responsibilities in maintaining vehicles. 5. Maintain a high level of professionalism when interacting with students, parents and staff. 6. Must work independently with minimum supervision. 7. Abide by drug, alcohol, and tobacco free in the work place policy. 8. Must accept and act upon constructive criticism. 9. Must communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form. 10. Must display appropriate grooming and appearance. 11. Must maintain a satisfactory attendance record. 12. Must possess a valid Illinois CDL (Class B with School Bus and Passenger Endorsement – SBP). 13. Must have a clean driving record as determined by the State of Illinois and the Illinois State Board of Education. 14. Demonstrated competence for assigned responsibilities. 15. Good vocal communication skills including the ability to write and read. 16. Must be able to hear well as it is necessary for the safety of the job duties. 17. Good vision is required for visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities. 18. Must have the ability to work with diverse groups of individuals. 19. General knowledge of district area. 20. Must have the ability to work indoors and outdoors with exposure to extreme temperatures and vehicle fumes. 21. Skilled in the safe operation of a school bus. 22. Must have the ability to detect malfunctioning equipment. 23. High School Diploma or GED is required. 24. Basic computer knowledge is required. 25. CDL Class B with passenger and school bus endorsements required/obtained.
