JWCC to Offer Welding Courses at Westermeyer Industries in Bluffs

John Wood Community College, in partnership with Westermeyer Industries in Bluffs, is offering welding courses for high school students and adults seeking additional skills in the trade.  Current welding professionals wanting to advance their skills are also encouraged to attend.

Two classes begin October 1. Basic Welding and Lab will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5-8:30 p.m. through December 19.  Welding Blueprint Reading will take place on Wednesdays from 5-8 p.m. through December 11. All classes are held at Westermeyer Industries in Bluffs.

Additional courses to complete a professional welding certificate will be offered in early 2014.

Bluffs High School students may take the courses and earn high school credit and JWCC college credits.  Westermeyer employees and area residents may also enroll in classes.

Upon completion of all classes, students will cover reading and interpreting welding symbols and blueprints, basic MIG and TIG welding, commercial welding practices, principles of welding safety and basic welding shop math.

Westermeyer Industries teamed with JWCC to train local high school students, adults and existing employees on site to accommodate student’s schedules and build the workforce skills in the Bluffs region.

“This partnership with JWCC brings welding courses directly to students in Bluffs, which is not only convenient, but a tremendous opportunity,” Gary Westermeyer, president of Westermeyer Industries said.  “People with welding skills are in demand across the region.  We have opportunities for welders at our company who can often advance to supervisory and quality control positions.  Plus, this helps the Bluffs community develop a skilled workforce.  Students can stay right here, get top-quality training and have local career opportunities,” he said.
