JWCC Kicks Off Community College Month with Top State Ranking

John Wood Community College kicked off Community College month by receiving a Top 10 ranking among Illinois 48 community colleges.

Schools.com reported that JWCC has the best student-to-teacher ratio, a greater percentage of students successfully transferring to four-year universities and the highest rate of students enrolled in online courses compared to other Illinois community colleges.

The ranking showed that a greater percentage of students at JWCC made successful transfers to four-year institutions than any other college in the Top 10. This was based on data reviewed by Schools.com that showed an overwhelming percentage of JWCC students – 76 percent in 2014 – were enrolled in study plans designed to help them transition into bachelor’s degree programs after completing their community college education. JWCC also offers career and technical programs, after which many students immediately enter the workforce prior to entering a four-year college.

In addition to students’ successful transfer to four-year universities, JWCC’s student-to-teacher ratio of 10 to 1 was by far the best among all community colleges in Illinois. JWCC also had the highest rate of students enrolled in online courses among the state’s community colleges.

“Our focus on student success is clearly reflected in this ranking,” Mike Elbe, JWCC president said.  “Faculty take pride in providing personal attention to students and give them an incredible foundation to be successful at any four-year university when they transfer. Every member of the College is invested in students’ success and we are focused on providing the best programs and services for our community.”

Schools.com ranked Illinois community colleges based on transfer rates to four-year schools, graduation rates, student-to-teacher ratio, cost of attendance, percentage of students enrolled in online coursework and additional data points from the National Center for Education Statistics.
