JWCC to Offer a Variety of Professional and Personal Development Courses in September
John Wood Community College’s Community Based Outreach will offer a variety of unique and educational classes to the public in September. All classes will be offered at JWCC’s Quincy campus at 48th and Harrison.
Floral Design I will be held on Mondays, September 11, 18, 25 and October 2 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The class will focus on creating a fresh floral centerpiece, working with silk, dried and “designer’s choice” arrangements. Contemporary designs and trends will be highlighted. A supply list will be proved the first night. The instructor is Greg Leuckenhoff. Cost is $60.
Facebook for Your Business will be held Monday and Wednesday, September 18 and 20, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. This two-session class will cover how to effectively advertise, target an audience, interpret feedback, manage pages, create an event and other Facebook tools for businesses. Students will receive a binder full of step-by-step guides, resources and information. The instructor is Jackie Weisenburger. Cost is $45. This class will also be offered again on October 16 and 18, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Social Media for Business will be held on Monday, September 25 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The class will provide an overview of the most commonly used social media outlets, including Google Calendar, Facebook, YouTube, Pinterest, LinkedIn and more. Students will learn about the benefits of using social media for business, and will receive a binder full of step-by-step guides, resources and information. The instructor is Jackie Weisenburger. Cost is $35.
Mindful Meditation will be held on Wednesdays, September 6, 13 and 20, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Explore techniques to incorporate into everyday life with this introduction to meditation. Students will learn how to improve relaxation and reduce negative responses to stress. No prior experience is needed. Students must bring their own Yoga mat and wear comfortable clothing. The instructor is Dr. Margie Williams and the cost is $40.
Dr. Sears Wellness Series will take place on Tuesdays, September 5, 12 and 19 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This series will use Dr. Sears’ Prime Time Living approach to building and maintaining good health during aging. Topics covered will include diet, exercise, immune system support, decreasing weight (especially around the waist) and reducing inflammation. The instructor is Dr. Margie Williams. Cost is $40.
Aeroponic Tower Gardening: Educational Application will be held Thursday, September 7, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. This class will explore a new vertical gardening technique using a tower garden, also known as an aeroponic system. Learn how to garden both inside and outside all year without weeding or watering. This session is geared towards people who would like to use tower gardening with children in a classroom, daycare or community setting. The instructor is Dr. Margie Williams. The cost is $20.
Aeroponic Tower Gardening: Application for Senior and Residential will be held Friday, September 8 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. This class will focus on tower gardening, or the aeroponic system, with a focus on horticultural therapy for seniors and those with disabilities. The instructor is Dr. Margie Williams, and the cost is $20.
Aeroponic Tower Gardening: General Use and Winter Gardening will be held on Saturday, September 9, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. This class will explore how to garden with a tower garden and is geared towards people who would like to use tower gardening in their home for fall/winter produce and then transition into growing produce outside in the warmer months. The instructor is Dr. Margie Williams. The cost is $20.
Conversational German will be held on Thursdays, September 7, 14, 21 and 28, from 7:00 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. Students will build their German language vocabulary and increase their skills with this four-session class by assembling and correctly pronouncing common phrases and sentences. Scenarios such as ordering food at a restaurant, travelling by plane and more will be covered. The instructor is Judy Percy. The cost is $40.
Tai Chi for Health will be held on Tuesdays, September 12, 19, 26 and October 3, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tai Chi is a series of gentle, slow motion and connected movements that reduce stress, improve mood and memory and improve heart health. The Mayo Clinic, Harvard Medical School, the CDC, among others recommend Tai Chi for general health and a number of chronic conditions. The instructor is Jessica Myers, and the cost is $50.
