JWCC and Quincy Vo-Tech Center Growing Their Own Diesel Technicians in Effort to Meet Growing Need

Kyle Foster can attest to the opportunities in diesel technology. He completed a one-year certificate from John Wood Community College (JWCC) in May and was offered a position at Sharkey Transportation prior to graduation.

The one-year diesel technology program offered collaboratively by JWCC and Quincy Area Vocational and Technical Center (QAVTC) is focused on producing more diesel techs for the region.  Graduates of the program are likely to receive job offers of at least $40,000 a year plus benefits even before they complete their certification.

Both schools are working together to attract more students of every age into the program to meet the growing workforce need. QAVTC students may take diesel classes in high school that count toward JWCC’s one-year diesel technology program.  Four students are currently enrolled at JWCC, but area companies need five times that number to multiply by a factor of 5.

“We can use multiple technicians right now to service trucks and we are one of 13 transportation firms in the Quincy area, not to mention farm equipment dealerships,” Casey Ragar of Sharkey Transportation shared.

Brian Armstrong, who serves as an instructor for JWCC and QAVTC, says the ideal diesel technician is someone who enjoys problem solving, working with their hands and technology, and has a great work ethic.

“We are not just looking at recent high school graduates to fill this need.  I’m sure there are adults out there looking to change careers and it can be done in just one-year with a great job waiting,” Armstrong said.
