Gary Butler Retrospective Featured at JWCC Heath Art Gallery

The Heath Center Art Gallery at John Wood Community College will showcase a Retrospective Exhibition of artwork by the late Gary Butler during the month of October. Butler lived the better part of his life along the Mississippi River, and his work was highly influenced by river life, towns and landscapes. He was a well-known wildlife artist and Quincy’s premier portrait artist.

"The retrospective has been a lot of fun to put together with a lot of reminiscing about my father,” said Rebecca Butler, one of Gary’s daughters who organized the art show. “Private collectors are lending artwork for the exhibit. In most cases, many of the pieces were literally taken off the easel and given to the collector so the artwork will be ‘new’ to the eyes of dad’s many fans."

The retrospective is on display October 1 through November 8. The public is invited to attend a reception on Friday, Oct. 25, from 6-9 pm during the Halloween Art Crawl. Light refreshments will be available.

“It has been a long time since this much of his work has been together and it will be fun to see such a wide span of dad's talents in one space,” Butler said. “Gallery guests will see examples of every kind of medium he worked in, from watercolor sketch books to formal portraits.”

The public is invited to view artwork during regular college hours, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Some pieces are for sale. For more information about the Heath Center Art Gallery contact Jenna Seaborn at
