Online Program

John Wood Community College is a small community college located in Quincy, Illinois. Our Fire Science Program has been in existence since 1979. We started our online/distance learning for Fire Science students in the spring of 2001.

The online program is designed to accommodate firefighters in areas where no Fire Science degree is available, as well as students who want to take Fire Science or even general education classes on the Internet. This allows students to work at their own pace, with the only time requirements being the class’ starting and ending dates. Many of the courses are Illinois State Fire Marshal approved, with end of course exams approved as state exams for certification to Illinois firefighters. How the out-of-state Fire Marshals’ handle these courses for certification will vary. The “hands-on” type classes that are required for the degree will, however, need to be transferred to our college. Copies of State Fire Marshal certificates, licenses, and other training documentation will need to be sent to our Fire Science office for evaluation.

The general education classes may be taken at John Wood or the firefighter’s local college and may be applied toward the degree. Firefighters will need to complete a minimum of 12 of their last 15 hours at JWCC to attain their AAS in Fire Science.

JWCC’s current tuition cost per credit hour for online classes is $160. The Fire Science classes, listed below, are all three credit hour courses with a total cost of $480 per class plus the cost of books. Many IFSTA and NFPA manuals are used as the course texts.

If you would like to get started with our Fire Science Program here at JWCC, please fill out the online admissions form and have your high school and college transcripts, as well as any fire or military certifications, sent to JWCC. We can then evaluate your submissions and get back with you!
