JWCC Community Based Outreach Offering Classes to the Public this Spring

John Wood Community College’s Community Based Outreach will continue to offer a variety of unique and creative classes to the public during the month of March and April. Classes will be held on the Quincy campus, located at 1301 S. 48th Street, unless otherwise noted.

Due to popular demand, an additional Garage Welding class will be offered. The class will cover types of welding machines and how to use them safely. Learn about inner shield, short arc welding, how to set voltage, wire speeds and how to hold angles on a welder. Also learn how to choose proper gas to weld various steels. Students are required to bring their own welding gloves and dress appropriately (long pants, long-sleeved shirts and leather shoes or boots. The class will meet on Saturday, March 14 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the JWCC Workforce Center, located at 4220 Kochs Lane in Quincy. Cost is $50 and the instructor is Ronald Kraft.

Basic Kitchen Survival Skills will provide insight into different cooking methods, making gravies and sauces, utilizing produce, learning about various cuts of meat, knife handling skills and proper sanitation guidelines. Hands-on cooking techniques acquired through the course will be used to demonstrate the preparation of a meal. Classes will meet Mondays, March 23, 30 and April 6, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Cost is $50 and the instructor is H. Max Hiller.

Advanced Cake Decorating will cover embellished borders, flowers and coloring techniques. Students will practice basket weave, lattice, lace techniques and basic fondant work techniques. A decorating kit will be included. Classes will meet on Wednesdays, April 8, 15 and 22, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Cost is $55 and the instructor is Karen Wagner.

Excel, a spreadsheet software, will be the focus of three classes this spring:

Basic Excel is for individuals who have little or no background with Excel. Classes will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays, March 17, 19 and 24, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Cost is $60.

Intermediate Excel is designed for those familiar with Excel, and will cover charts, conditional formatting, headers and footers as well as the SUMIF, COUNTIF and IF functions. Classes will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, March 31, April 2 and 7, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Cost is $60.

Advanced Excel will cover pivot tables, slicers and formula-driven conditional formatting. Classes will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, April 21, 23, 28 and 30, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Cost is $80. Rita Schmitt will instruct the classes. Participants who register will receive a complimentary USB drive at their first class.
