Job Description

This position has the potential to be a 10-month or 12-month appointment.  A 10-month appointment will serve as the Head Women’s Basketball Coach only and a 12-month appointment will serve as the Head Women’s Basketball Coach and as a member of the Athletic Department Administration serving in such capacities as Assistant Athletic Director, Manager of Athletic Operations, or Athletic Facilities Coordinator.  Other roles may include Admissions Advisor, Success Coach, Academic Advisor, or tenure-track faculty member (requires a master’s degree in the teaching field or master’s degree with 18 graduate hours in the teaching field).

 

The part-time, 10-month Head Women’s Basketball Coach position will report to the Athletic Director and will be located on JWCC’s main campus in Quincy, Illinois.

 

The full-time, 12-month Head Women’s Basketball Coach who is also serving as a member of the staff or faculty, will report to the Athletic Director and other designated supervisor depending on role, and will be located on JWCC’s main campus in Quincy, Illinois.

 

The Women’s Basketball Coach plays a pivotal role in leading and managing all aspects of the women’s basketball program within the organization or institution. This includes player development, team strategy, recruiting, game preparation, and fostering a positive and competitive team culture. The coach’s strong leadership skills, effective communication, and deep understanding of basketball are crucial to our team’s success.

 

This position offers a dynamic full-time job coaching women’s basketball, with the opportunity for other administrative duties that will be defined at the time of hire based on the candidate’s background and strengths. These additional roles may include Assistant Athletic Director, Manager of Athletic Operations, Athletic Facilities Coordinator, Admissions Advisor, Success Coach, Academic Advisor, or tenure-track faculty member (requires a master’s degree in the teaching field or master’s degree with 18 graduate hours in the teaching field), providing a diverse and stimulating work environment.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Player Development:

  • Develop and implement individualized training programs to enhance the skills and abilities of each player.
  • Conduct regular practice sessions focused on skill development, teamwork, and game strategy.
  • Provide constructive feedback and guidance to players to facilitate their growth and improvement.

Team Management:

  • Establish team goals and objectives in alignment with the organization’s mission and values.
  • Develop and implement strategies to maximize team performance during games and competitions.
  • Foster a cohesive and supportive team environment that promotes camaraderie, sportsmanship, and mutual respect.

Recruitment and Talent Identification:

  • Identify and recruit talented student-athletes who demonstrate the potential to contribute to the team’s success.
  • Build relationships with high school coaches, club teams, and other sources to identify prospects.
  • Evaluate prospective players based on their athletic abilities, academic achievements, and character.

Game Preparation:

  • Analyze opponents’ strengths and weaknesses to develop effective game plans and strategies.
  • Conduct film sessions and scouting reports to prepare players for upcoming games.
  • Make in-game adjustments and decisions to optimize the team’s performance and maximize the chances of success.

Academic Support:

  • Monitor the academic progress and eligibility of student-athletes to ensure compliance with academic standards and regulations.
  • Provide support and resources to help student-athletes balance their academic and athletic responsibilities.
  • Encourage and facilitate academic achievement among team members.

Community Engagement:

  • Serve as a positive ambassador for the women’s basketball program within the community.
  • Participate in outreach activities like youth basketball clinics, community service projects, and fundraising events.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with alumni, fans, and stakeholders to support the program’s success.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field; Master’s preferred.
  • Previous coaching experience at the high school, collegiate, or professional level.
  • In-depth knowledge of basketball fundamentals, strategies, and techniques.
  • Ability to recruit and develop talented student-athletes.
  • Commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive team culture.
  • Knowledge of NJCAA or relevant governing body rules and regulations.
  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record (travel is required).

 

Skills and Competencies

  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
  • Willingness to travel for games, recruiting trips, and other team-related activities.
  • Passion for coaching and mentoring young athletes.
  • Previous coaching experience at a community or junior college.
  • Dedication to promoting academic and personal development among student-athletes.
  • Compliance with all institutional policies and procedures.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.

 

Working Conditions:

  • The Head Women’s Basketball coach will work in an indoor environment, including office settings and gymnasiums.
  • The role involves frequent standing, walking, running, and other physical activities related to coaching and training athletes.
  • Must be able to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Evening and weekend hours are required to accommodate practices, games, and travel for competitions.
  • Travel is required for away games and recruiting activities, which may include overnight stays.
  • The position requires effective communication and interaction with student-athletes, coaching staff, and the public.

 

Work Schedule:

  • Full-time, 12-month position with a typical schedule of Monday – Thursday (8:00am – 5:00pm) and Friday (8:00am – 12:00pm). Evenings and weekends as needed to accommodate practice, travel, and game schedule.

 

SALARY

  • The Head Women’s Basketball Coach only is a non-exempt position will an estimated annual salary of $11,000.00 – $15,000.00.
  • The Head Women’s Basketball Coach/Member of the Staff or Faculty is an exempt position with an estimated annual salary of $42,000.00 – $50,000.00.
