TRiO Student Support Services

TRiO SSS is an educational support program funded by the U.S. Department of Education. As a TRiO grant, it provides FREE help to 170 qualifying JWCC students who are first generation college students, meet income guidelines, or who have a disability.

Purpose of the Program

To improve the academic grade point averages and increase the number of participants in good standings at JWCC, leading to better success here and at your chosen transfer college or university.

To increase the retention, graduation, and transfer rates of TRiO SSS participants.

To foster an institutional climate supportive of the success of individuals in the targeted groups.

What services are offered?

  • Easy access to individual academic, financial aid, career and personal assistance by a full-time staff in an accepting environment.
  • Thorough assessment of academic and personal strengths and weaknesses upon acceptance.
  • Academic support services including aid from professionals in Math, English, Writing, Science, and Accounting. Also provided are group and individual instruction through general learning workshops.
  • Access to an Academic Advisor dedicated to TRiO SSS participants.
  • On-going relationships with TRiO SSS staff members for personal and academic support.
  • Opportunities to explore transfer options through individual meetings, workshops and campus visits.
  • Cultural opportunities on campus and in the community.
  • Short term textbook and laptop lending programs.
  • Advocacy training and access assistance for students with disabilities.
  • Updates on college events and news designed to support campus involvement.
  • Referrals to community service agencies.

Who is eligible?

Must qualify as low income, or first generation in college, or have a documented disability, and have an academic need for support. Usually interested in transfer or a four-year college or university.

Why should I apply?

TRiO SSS Improves Student Performance:

During the 2014-15 academic year an average GPA for TRiO SSS student participants was 3.13.

Of the 170 TRiO SSS participants, 141 or 83% remained enrolled at JWCC or successfully graduated/transferred.

96% of TRiO SSS student-participants remain in good standings with JWCC.

Of the 62 freshmen who entered the TRiO SSS program In 2012, 57% graduated and/or transferred to a four-year institution within 3 years.

TRiO SSS participants are also involved in JWCC campus activities and hold offices in Student Government Association (SGA), Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) and intercollegiate sports teams.

TRIO SCHOLARSHIP

The TRiO Grant Award is provided by the U.S. Department of Education to support the educational pursuits of TRiO SSS participants at John Wood Community College. Grant amounts are dependent upon financial need and established through Pell Grant guidelines, to include minimum and maximum amounts awarded.

Qualifications governing this TRiO Grant Award are:

  • Student must be a PELL Grant Recipient and meet minimum unmet financial need criteria, as determined through the JWCC office of Financial Aid.
  • Other factors may include active participation in TRiO, either virtually, in person, by phone, or email, be in good academic standing with the college, no D’s or F’s in current semester, enrolled for the spring 2024 semester (unless you graduated in the fall).
