Eligibility Requirements

Selection of Upward Bound Participants will be based on the applicant’s:

  • Status as a First Generation College-bound Student {neither parent has earned a bachelor’s degree (four-year) degree} AND/OR their family’s income does not exceed the guidelines determined by the U.S. Department of Education AND/OR the student is at a high risk for academic failure
  • Motivation to Participate
  • Academic Needs & Potential
  • Teacher & Counselor Recommendations
  • Has Completed the 8th Grade but has not yet entered the 12th Grade

Application to the program does not guarantee admission. However, eligible students who are not selected due to space limitations will be placed on a waiting list.

2. Student & Parent(s) Complete an Interview with the Supervisor and Advisor. Upon receiving a completed Upward Bound Application, the parent(s) will be contacted to schedule the interview.

How much does the program cost?

All services and trips are completely free to our students. Our students must meet the income and admissions requirements set by the federal government to qualify for program admission.

Does the college I attend have to be John Wood Community College or Quincy University if I am in this program?

No – but both colleges would love to have you as a student. You would be close to your family. You have the option to attend any college that you choose!

Does Upward Bound pay for college?

No – Upward Bound assists students to find money to pay for college. Upon completion of the program, students may be eligible for an Upward Bound scholarship to cover 1-2 courses through JWCC the summer between their senior year of high school and freshman year of college to transfer to any university they choose.
