Registration is Open for a Variety of Professional and Personal Development Courses at JWCC

John Wood Community College’s Community-Based Outreach offers a variety of unique and educational classes to the public. All classes are offered at JWCC’s Quincy campus at 48th and Harrison (unless otherwise noted).

Community-Based Outreach offers noncredit personal enrichment and professional development classes. The goal is to provide a wide range of programs to meet community needs and interests. The classes promote lifelong learning through courses aimed at skill development and recreational enjoyment.

Digging Deeper and Trying New Menus with the Mediterranean Diet

 

Date: Tuesday- March 5, 2024

Time: 4:30-8:30 PM

Cost: $80

Delve into the world of Mediterranean cuisine. This hands-on class invites participants to explore different recipes for salads in a jar, protein balls, and main entrees. Bring a paring knife and three large mason jars.

Spanish for Beginners

Date: Tuesday and Thursday March 5, 7

Time: 5:00pm-7:00pm

Cost: $40

Join Instructor Anguiano-Reyes in an interactive course where you’ll be taught by a native Spanish speaker

and designed as an introductory course for absolute beginners. Put your knowledge into practice with your classmates and leave with resources to study at home.

Foundations of Investing

Date: Tuesday March 5

Time: 6:00pm-7:00pm

Cost: $10

Join Instructor Trenton Murfin in a workshop for people to learn an overview of investing, including key terms and types of investments. The session will include the basic features of bonds, stocks and packages investments, and the importance of asset allocation.

Charcuterie Fruit Board

Date: Thursday March 7, 2024

Time: 5:30pm – 8:00pm

Cost: $65

In this hands-on workshop, Crystal Yock will guide you in creating a charcuterie fruit board. Learn proper food handling techniques, food safety tips, flavor profiling, and the history of charcuterie. Bring a small paring knife.

Garage Welding

Date: Saturday March 9

Time: 8:00am – 12:00pm

Cost: $65

Location: Workforce Development Center, 2720 North 42nd St, Quincy.

Join Instructor Mark Schenk in learning about the types of welders and how to use them safely! Topics include inner shield, flux core arc welding and short arc welding, how to set voltage and wire speeds, and how to hold angles on a welder. Learn how to choose the proper gas to weld various steels. Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – Please bring your own welding gloves and be sure to dress appropriately (long pants, an old long-sleeved shirt, and leather shoes or boots).

What Happens After the Paychecks Stop

Join Trenton Murfin in discussing income during retirement . Explore how to budget for retirement expenses, examine potential sources of retirement income, discuss strategies to provide for your goals and address risks.

Culinary Mixology (Non-Alcoholic Drinks)

Date: Wednesday March 13, 2024

Time: 5:00pm – 8:00pm

Get ready to impress for St. Patty’s Day! Learn from instructor Vanessa Hall how to make fun drinks to entertain with at a party or as a treat for yourself. Drinks don’t have to be alcoholic to be amazing and to impress. This class will teach you everything you need to know to bring freshness and culinary expression kitchen into the party scene. Please bring a chef’s knife.

Heart saver First Aid, CPR, and AED

Date: Thursday March 14, 2024

Time: 5:30pm – 8:30pm

Cost: $100

Learn from instructor Sarah Straza how to assess the scene safely and administer first aid if needed . Learn high quality CPR. Individuals will earn their First Aid and CPR certifications by completing this class. Cost of the class includes the Heart Saver book.
